Public breastfeeding is still a highly controversial topic that often generates a lot of debate. Why does such a natural act as breastfeeding provoke so many reactions, especially in a reality that claims to value liberalism and where, it must be said, bodies are frequently exposed?

Constantly sparking controversy, exclusion, and criticism, American model Mara Martin broke this cycle by walking the runway with her daughter Aria, whom she was breastfeeding, in the middle of a fashion show.
It can be said that Mara has been the subject of many media reports recently, following the Swimwear Fashion Week held in Miami last July. The 32-year-old model, who has posed for Sports Illustrated, appeared on stage breastfeeding her five-month-old daughter. The photograph, touching for some and scandalous for others, went viral in the media and on social networks and quickly sparked a new debate.

Mara shared her happiness on her Instagram page, stating: “There are no words adequate enough to express how I feel after being selected for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit runway. I am amazed that my daughter and I are making headlines for something I do every day. I am truly grateful to help promote breastfeeding and to show other women that we are all capable of doing it. This is my daily life as a mother.”

The reactions on social media were inevitable. Between praise and positive responses on one side, and outright rejection on the other—along with all the criticism and attacks that this implies—Mara managed to remain calm and proud of having succeeded, in her own way, in trying to “normalize” breastfeeding.
