A huge bear knocked on the forester’s door: the old man opened it without even having a clue why the wild animal had come, or what was going to happen…

For many years he had lived alone on the edge of the forest. Once, life had been lively there: friends would come to visit, relatives occasionally dropped by, a car stood in the yard, and conversations could be heard from the house. But as time passed, all of that disappeared. His wife had died, his son had moved far away, and he had almost completely stopped writing. The lakeside house had become quiet and empty.
The old man had grown accustomed to solitude. In the mornings, he would step onto the front porch, watch the forest, listen to the wind whispering through the pines, and light the stove. Sometimes moose passed by in the distance, or foxes appeared stealthily, but wild animals never dared come near the house.
That morning he woke up before dawn. At first, he thought the wind had struck the door with a branch. Then a dull thud sounded, as if someone had stepped heavily on the front steps.
The old man put on a warm coat and cautiously opened the door. He froze.

Right in front of the door stood a huge bear. Steam rose from its mouth, and snow glittered on its fur. But that was not the strangest thing.
Between its teeth, it held a small bear cub.
The beast did not growl or show its teeth. The bear simply stood there, looking the man straight in the eyes. There was no anger in its gaze, only concern.
The old man felt his heart pounding in his chest. Anyone else in his place would have slammed the door and hidden inside. Reason told him to do exactly that.
But something in that gaze held him back. He took a slow step forward. The bear carefully placed the cub on the snow.
And in that moment, the wild animal did something that finally made the old man understand why it had come to his house.
The little cub’s body barely moved.
When the old man bent down to take a closer look, he noticed a thin metal ring on its paw. It was a poacher’s trap, dug deep into its skin. The cub barely moved and struggled to breathe.
The old man carefully loosened the ring and freed the paw. Then he lifted the little animal and brought it inside. He placed it next to the stove, covered it with an old wool blanket, and gently rubbed it to warm it up.
Meanwhile, the mother bear sat near the porch the whole time and did not leave.
After a while, the cub moved slightly and opened its eyes. The old man picked it up and took it outside.
The mother bear stepped forward, gently took the cub in her mouth, and then suddenly lightly touched the man’s hand with her nose.
Then she turned and slowly disappeared into the forest.

The next day, the old man found several similar traps in the undergrowth. He removed each one.
After this encounter, he resumed his daily walks in the forest, just as he had many years before.
