My dog had been acting strangely all evening.
At first, I thought he was nervous because of the storm outside. The wind was pounding against the windows, the lights flickered once, and the whole apartment felt colder than usual. But then he stopped in the middle of the hallway and stared at me with eyes I had never seen before.
He barked once.
Then again.
Then louder.
“Max, stop,” I said, tired and confused.

But he didn’t stop.
He ran toward me, barked right in front of my face, then suddenly turned around and rushed down the hallway as if something were pulling him there. I followed him, my heart beginning to beat faster. He stopped near an old wooden section of the floor, lowered his head, and started sniffing like crazy.
Then he scratched the floor.
Hard.
“Max… what are you doing?”
He growled at the floorboards.
That sound chilled me.
My dog had never growled inside the house before.
Before I could pull him away, he bit the edge of a loose wooden plank and started pulling with all his strength. The wood cracked. Dust rose into the air. I dropped to my knees, trying to stop him, but then I noticed something.
The plank was already loose.
Not loose from wear.
Loose like it had been moved recently.
My hands started shaking.
Max pulled again, harder this time, and the board finally popped upward. Beneath it was a dark, hollow space under the floor.
And in that darkness…
There was something.
I leaned closer, holding my breath, just as Max began barking louder than ever.

I didn’t want to look inside.
Every instinct in my body told me to stand up, grab my dog, and leave the apartment immediately. But I couldn’t move. My eyes stayed fixed on that dark opening beneath the floor, where something was hidden in the shadows.
Max kept barking, but now his bark sounded different.
Not like a warning.
Like a plea.
I grabbed my phone and turned on the flashlight. My hand was shaking so badly that the beam of light trembled over the broken wood, dust, and rusty nails sticking out of the floor.
Then the light fell on something wrapped in black plastic.
My stomach turned.
For one terrible second, I thought it was something no one should ever find in their home.
I whispered, “What is that?”

Max moved closer to the hole and growled again, but he didn’t move toward the object. He stood between it and me, as if protecting me from whatever was hidden there.
Slowly, I reached down and pulled at the plastic.
It was heavy.
Too heavy.
The tape around it looked recent. Someone had sealed it tightly, quickly, as if they were afraid of being caught. My breathing became short. The apartment suddenly went silent except for the storm outside and Max’s low growl.
Then I saw writing on the side of the package.
It was my name.
My full name.
I dropped it immediately and stumbled backward.
Max barked again, louder, as if he already knew what I had just realized.

What was hidden beneath my floor had not been forgotten.
It had been left there for me.
And just as I grabbed my phone to call the police, I heard a sound from the other side of the apartment.
The handle of the front door moved.
Slowly.
Someone was trying to get in.
