“Maybe she’s dreaming about something?” the wife tried to reassure herself.
“Or something is bothering her,” the husband guessed.
But night after night it was the same. Sometimes the dog even put her paw on the owners’ chest or face. Once the wife woke up and saw the dog sitting on top of her husband, as if holding him with her paws. She was terrified.
The next morning they decided to install a camera to understand what was happening while they slept.
They were shocked when they watched the recording.
In the video, the dog stayed beside them all night, watching their every movement. Sometimes she would approach quietly and place her paw on their chest or stomach as if she wanted to smother them.
The wife was genuinely frightened. She insisted on taking the dog back to the shelter.
“She’s not bad, but this is abnormal behavior,” she told the shelter volunteer.
— “What happened? Did she bite someone?”
— “No… she behaves very strangely. She sits at night and watches us, as if she wants to hurt us.”
The shelter woman remained silent for a moment, then sighed deeply:
— “Oh God… poor animal. You probably didn’t know. Her previous owner was an elderly man, around eighty. He died in his sleep one night. The dog woke up next to him and didn’t leave his side until the neighbors arrived…”
A heavy silence fell over the room.
— “Now she’s simply afraid of losing the ones she loves again. She keeps watch to make sure you’re breathing, that everything is fine. She’s protecting you.”
The wife burst into tears, and the husband lowered his head, struggling to hold back his own. They hugged the dog and returned home — as a family of three.
Since then, at night, she still sits beside them — but now the couple looks at her with affection.
