That evening, a cold autumn rain was falling. The man was walking home when he heard a plaintive whimper by the side of the road. Under a streetlamp, in the wet grass, lay a German shepherd — thin, injured, her dirty fur stuck to her body.
He knelt beside her and cautiously reached out his hand. The dog was trembling but showed no aggression, letting out only a faint sob, as if begging for help.
“Hang on, girl,” he murmured. “I’ll take you to the vet.”
At the veterinary clinic, while the doctors examined her, one of them frowned.
“She’s not only injured… she’s pregnant.”
“What?…” the man said, stunned.
“The term is advanced. If she doesn’t give birth today, she could die.”
He stayed waiting until dawn. Behind the glass, the veterinarians worked busily, and he, sitting on a plastic chair, listened to the rain start falling again outside.
At dawn, a small cry was heard — the dog had given birth. The doctors sighed in relief, but almost immediately, they exchanged a worried glance.
“Look at them… those aren’t puppies,” one of the assistants whispered.

The little ones were strange: too large for newborns, with elongated snouts and eyes yellow as amber. Their cries didn’t sound like yelps — more like a long, hoarse moan.
“They’re not purebred dogs,” said the veterinarian, crouching down. “The father is probably… a wolf.”
The man looked up.
“A wolf?…”
“Yes. From the marks on the mother’s body, she may have lived in the forest. It happens sometimes — a wild wolf mates with a dog, and hybrids are born.”
The dog weakly lifted her head and licked one of her pups.
“They’re still her children,” the man said softly.
A week later, he brought the shepherd home. The pups stayed at the center, under the researchers’ supervision. One of the veterinarians said:
“These little ones are rare — intelligent, strong, and loyal. But they must be raised carefully: there’s a trace of the wild in them.”
