I went to the hospital where my husband worked to surprise him, but one of his colleagues looked at me with tears in his eyes and asked, ‘He hasn’t told you anything, has he?’”
Daniel and I had been married for eleven years.
All those years, I had to share my husband with that hospital.
He was an exceptional surgeon, and I was proud to know that every day he was saving lives.
But for almost a year, something had changed.
I would prepare his dinner and set it aside even before sitting down to eat mine.
He had missed Thanksgiving, our wedding anniversary, and our daughter’s eighth birthday.
Sometimes, he didn’t even come home.
“We’re overwhelmed, sweetheart. Don’t wait up for me, okay?”
Whenever he finally got into our bed in the middle of the night, he looked so exhausted that I kept my complaints to myself.
One night, I woke up and found him sitting on the edge of the bed, his hands covering his face and his shoulders trembling.
“Daniel?”
He quickly wiped his eyes before turning toward me.
“It’s been a difficult day. Go back to sleep.”
I never pressed him.
So that Tuesday morning, after watching him leave with his ID badge around his neck, I decided to surprise him.
I prepared his favorite lunch, added a slice of apple pie, and hid a little note underneath his napkin:
“You don’t always have to save everyone. Today, let me take care of you.”
I headed to the hospital, imagining the smile on his face when he saw me arrive.
But as soon as I walked through the doors, I realized something was wrong.
At the nurses’ station, a woman I had known for a long time stopped smiling when she saw me.
“Is Daniel here?” I asked excitedly.
“And most importantly, don’t tell him I came. He’ll just complain again that I went all the way here for nothing.”
She exchanged a worried glance with the nurse standing beside her.
My smile disappeared.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen to him? Where’s Daniel?”
Neither of them answered me.
I became seriously worried when I saw Michael, one of Daniel’s closest colleagues, walking toward me.
His face was completely pale.
“I’m so happy to see you!” I exclaimed with a small, nervous smile.
“Can you tell me where Daniel is?”
Michael stopped in front of me and stared at my face for a long moment.
Then, suddenly, his eyes filled with tears.
He lowered his voice.
“He really hasn’t told you anything, has he?”

Michael looked away, as if searching for the right words.
“What do you mean?” I asked.
My voice was trembling.
He took a deep breath.
“Daniel asked us not to tell you anything.”
I felt my heart sink.
“Nothing about what?”
Michael looked around before stepping closer to me.
“Three months ago, Daniel received some medical test results.”
I felt my legs beginning to give way.
“What results?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he whispered:
“He’s sick.”
The tray I was holding nearly fell to the floor.
“No… It can’t be. He would have told me something.
Michael closed his eyes for a few seconds.
“That’s exactly the problem. He didn’t want you to know.”
I gripped the counter.
All the nights I had seen him exhausted. All the times he had refused to talk. His absences, his silence, his red-rimmed eyes…
Suddenly, everything took on a different meaning.
“What kind of illness?” I asked.
Michael hesitated.
“I’m not a doctor. I shouldn’t even be telling you this. But you’re his wife. You have the right to know.”
“Michael, please.”
Finally, he said the words that made the world around me come to a standstill.
“A tumor.”
For a few seconds, I stopped breathing.
“Where?”
“In his brain.”
I covered my mouth with my hand.
I remembered that night when Daniel had been sitting on the edge of the bed, his shoulders trembling.
It hadn’t simply been a difficult day.
He had been crying because he knew.
“How long has he known?”
“The doctors discovered it about three months ago. Since then, he’s undergone several tests.”
“And he’s still working?”
Michael nodded.
“He refuses to stop.”
Tears began streaming down my cheeks.
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
Michael looked at me sadly.
“Because he believes he has to protect you.”
I shook my head.
“Protect me? He made me believe he wasn’t coming home because he was too busy!”
Michael didn’t answer.
At that moment, a door opened behind us.
I turned around.
Daniel was standing in the hallway.
He had heard everything.
For a few seconds, we simply stared at each other.
Then he lowered his gaze to the bag I was still holding.
“You came to surprise me…”
His voice was barely audible.
I walked toward him.
“Why, Daniel?”
He didn’t answer.
“Why did you hide this from me?”
His eyes filled with tears.
“Because I knew that if I told you, you would stop living for yourself and start living only for me.”
I took his hand.
“You had no right to make that decision for me.”
He squeezed my fingers.
Then he whispered something that sent a chill through me:
“There’s something else you still don’t know.”
I looked up at him.
“The tumor isn’t the reason I’m here today…”
He looked at Michael.
Then he looked directly into my eyes.
“I’ve discovered something about our daughter.”
