“A woman who is unable to have children has no place in this family,” my mother-in-law told me.
My name is Camille Durand, and I never imagined that one day I would receive an invitation from the very woman who had destroyed me.
Emma de Montclair, Hugo’s mother, constantly repeated that the Montclairs never made mistakes. To her, the family name mattered more than anything else — even love.
When Hugo fell in love with me, a simple elementary school teacher from a modest background, she immediately decided that I was not good enough for him. After medical tests revealed Hugo’s low fertility and the possibility of a complicated pregnancy for me, she turned those facts into a verdict.
“A woman who is unable to have children has no place in this family.”
I looked at Hugo, waiting for him to defend me, but he lowered his eyes. And at that moment, I understood that everything was over.
I left that evening. Two months later, I discovered that I was pregnant… with triplets. I tried to reach him again and again. No answer. Then I understood: he had left me.
I moved away and raised my children alone — Léo, Inès, and Théo — while creating a small educational center to survive with dignity.
Four years passed. Hugo had become the perfect man his mother had always wanted him to be, and he was about to marry another woman, Élise Laurent, the heiress of a large family.
Then I received an invitation to Hugo’s wedding. “Come and understand everything you have lost.”
I almost threw it away. But Inès found an old photo of Hugo. She asked me who that man was who looked so much like her.
That day, I made my decision: I would go. On the day of the wedding, I entered the hall with my three children.
When Hugo saw us, he turned pale. Inès pointed at him and asked:
“Mom… is he our father? And today, is he marrying another woman?”
Hugo froze. And what happened next was simply unbelievable.

Hugo stood frozen, unable to take his eyes off my children. His face was unrecognizable, as if the ground had suddenly given way beneath his feet.
The guests began to whisper. I could feel every gaze fixed on me, but I remained still. For the first time in years, I was no longer the woman who had been erased.
“Hugo… say something,” Élise, his fiancée, whispered as she saw him turn pale.
But he was no longer listening to anyone. His eyes were fixed on Léo, Inès, and Théo, as if he were trying to comprehend the impossible.
And suddenly, his voice broke.
“Camille… are they… my children?”
A freezing silence fell over the room. I took a step forward.
“You didn’t answer when I needed you, Hugo. You didn’t answer when I was alone.”

I paused and held my children’s hands tightly.
“They are here today. And all they want to know is who their father is.”
A murmur swept through the hallway. The clinking of glasses stopped. Even the music came to a halt.
Hugo took a trembling step toward me. But before he could say anything, a cold voice echoed behind us…
And everything fell apart.
