💍 A few months ago, a young man messaged me on a dating site. I’m 55 years old, and I didn’t want to have a relationship with him. But he was so persistent that, little by little, he managed to win my attention. On our second date, he gave me a ring with a huge “diamond.” I was over the moon. But yesterday, I discovered the terrible truth about that ring… 😳
Part 1
When he first messaged me on a dating site, I thought it was a joke.
He was just over thirty, while I was fifty-five.
Before replying, I read his message several times.
— You’re a very beautiful woman. I’d like to get to know you.
I thanked him politely but immediately warned him:
— I think you’ve got the wrong person. I’m looking for a man closer to my age.
But he didn’t give up.
For weeks, he messaged me almost every day.
He asked me how my day had gone, showed interest in my work, and sent me photos from his walks. There was nothing vulgar or mocking in his messages, so little by little, I stopped thinking of them as the advances of a stranger who had simply appeared in my life by chance.
One day, he suggested that we meet.
I hesitated for a long time, but eventually I agreed.
We met at a small restaurant. He looked exactly like his photos: young, well-groomed, and very attentive.
He looked at me as if he truly saw a woman he was attracted to.
After that meeting, we started seeing each other more and more often.
He brought me flowers, called me in the evenings, and told me that the age difference between us didn’t bother him at all.
I didn’t even realize when I started eagerly waiting for his messages.
Then something happened that I never would have expected.
One evening, he took out a small box and handed it to me.
Inside was a ring with a large, transparent stone.
— It’s for you, he said.
I felt embarrassed.
— What is it?
He smiled.
— A diamond.
I could hardly believe my eyes.
He took my hand and said…
— I want you to know that you’re special to me.
I had never received a gift like that before.
That evening, for the first time, I thought that perhaps love really didn’t depend on age.
I was happy.
I had the feeling that, for the first time in a long while, someone had entered my life without caring that I was fifty-five years old.
I even started telling my friends about him.
They were surprised, and some warned me that I should be careful.
But I didn’t want to listen to anyone.
I was convinced that, after all those years, I had finally met someone who truly appreciated me.
But yesterday, everything changed.
I accidentally discovered a detail that made my hands tremble…
I looked at the ring, and suddenly I realized that, all this time, I had completely misunderstood the true meaning of that gift.

Part 2
Yesterday, I went to visit my friend Irina.
She has worked as a jeweler for years, so I decided to show her the ring.
I wanted to know approximately how much it might be worth.
I took the ring off my finger and handed it to her.
Irina took it in her hand, examined it carefully, and then pulled out a special magnifying glass.
A few seconds later, her expression changed.
— Where did you get this ring?
— A man gave it to me.
— Did he tell you it was a diamond?
— Yes.
She examined the stone again and then said quietly:
— It’s not a diamond.
At first, I even burst out laughing.
— What do you mean, “it’s not a diamond”?
— It’s simply cubic zirconia. It’s pretty, but its value is completely different.
I felt a knot in my heart.
So he had deceived me?
I called him immediately.
— Why did you tell me it was a diamond?
There was a few seconds of silence on the other end of the line.
Then he replied:
— Because I wanted to make you happy.
I was angry.
— Happy because of a lie?
He sighed deeply.
— It’s true, I didn’t tell you the truth. But I didn’t do it to deceive you.
I didn’t understand anything anymore.
Then he told me something I never would have expected.
The truth was that he couldn’t afford to buy a real diamond.
He worked as an ordinary manager, lived in a small rented apartment, and was saving almost all of his money to start his own business.
But one day, while we were talking, I had told him:
— I never need expensive gifts. For me, the most important thing is for a person to be honest.
He remembered my words.
So when he decided to give me a ring, he bought a beautiful ring with a cubic zirconia stone.
But then he became afraid that I would be disappointed if I discovered that the stone wasn’t expensive.
So he told me it was a diamond.
— I was afraid that if I told you the truth, you would think I wasn’t good enough for you, he confessed.
I remained silent for a long time.
Until yesterday, I was ready to believe that the months we had spent together had all been one enormous lie.
But now I looked at that ring differently.
Yes, the stone wasn’t real.
But his feelings — at least according to his words — were sincere.
I took the ring off, placed it in front of me, and asked him:
— What if you had told me the truth from the very beginning?
He replied:
— I would have wanted you to wear it anyway.
I put the ring back on my finger.
And that evening, for the first time in a long while, I smiled.
Because sometimes the value of a gift doesn’t depend on the price of the stone, but on the reason why a person chose to give it to you.
And yet, one question continued to torment me:
Had he really lied only because he was afraid of losing me?
Or is there still another secret hidden in this story?
