At my son’s graduation ceremony, I was told that my front-row seat had already been taken.
Sitting there was Kristina, my ex-husband’s young wife. When she saw me, she gave me a smug smile.
Under her seat was a torn name card that read:
“Marina — Mother of the Graduate.”
“Kristina said there had been a mistake and that the real family should be sitting here,” one of the volunteers explained awkwardly.
Not wanting to cause a scene, I quietly moved to the back of the hall and stood against the wall.
My ex-husband left when our son was seven years old. He rarely helped us and only showed up when there was an opportunity to take nice photos.
For years, I worked two jobs to pay for my son’s textbooks, extracurricular activities, and school competitions.
When the principal announced that Alexey was the top student in his graduating class, the entire audience rose to its feet.
My son walked up to the microphone, but instead of reading the speech he had prepared, he looked straight into my eyes.

“The woman standing against the back wall raised me alone for eleven years,” Alexey continued. “She worked nights, never missed a single one of my performances, and was always there when no one else was watching.”
The entire hall erupted in applause.
Alexey stepped down from the stage, walked over to me, and placed his gold medal around my neck.
“It belongs to both of us, Mom.”
Kristina left the hall in tears, while my ex-husband didn’t even dare to look up.
