The man called the pest control specialists because of a strange noise in the walls. What did they discover there?

A woodpecker in California hid about 320 kg of acorns inside the walls of a house. This was reported by the US television network NBC, citing a pest control company.
One of the residents called a pest control specialist because he was hearing strange noises in the walls and small insects were regularly coming out of them.

When the specialist arrived on site, he opened the wall and discovered huge stores of acorns inside. It turned out that the house had been turned into an acorn storage site by a woodpecker from the Melanerpes family (also known as the acorn woodpecker). It had been storing the acorns by drilling holes through the roof and walls of the house.
In total, more than 700 pounds of acorns (about 320 kg) were removed from the hiding place.
However, the story did not end there.

After the discovery, the homeowner was completely stunned. He never imagined that a simple bird could literally turn his house into a giant storage pantry. The specialist, in turn, explained that this behavior is typical for the acorn woodpecker: these birds store large quantities of acorns for harder times, but rarely on such a scale—and even more rarely inside a human house.

A closer examination of the walls and roof revealed hundreds of carefully arranged small holes, each of which served as a hiding place for an acorn. It was almost as if the bird had built a very precise organizational system, piece by piece—or rather, acorn by acorn. Some acorns were still fresh, while others had already attracted insects, which explained the small creatures the resident had observed.
The cleanup work in the house took a long time and was very labor-intensive. It was not just about removing the acorns, but also about repairing the structural damage they had caused. Parts of the walls had to be rebuilt and the roof reinforced to prevent another “invasion” of this kind.

The woodpecker in question was later seen several times in the area, as if it were guarding its former hiding place. Experts believe it will take a long time for it to build up such a cache again—this time, however, probably in a tree rather than in a house.
This unusual story quickly spread across social media and fascinated many people. It serves as a reminder of how surprising nature can be—and sometimes a little intrusive—especially when the boundaries between the wild and human living spaces blur.
