Emily, sixteen, adored her. Every day after school, she would go to the pen, sit beside her, stroke her coarse back, and share her thoughts. The sow listened attentively, sometimes grunting softly, as if responding.
But in recent weeks, Rosie had changed. Almost every morning, before sunrise, she would go to the far end of the farm — where an old oak grove began. The ground there was rocky and hard, and her father rarely plowed that patch.
