On the day of my mother’s funeral, I ended up in the river – I don’t know if I slipped by accident or if someone pushed me on purpose. But when I miraculously managed to get out of the water, I accidentally overheard a conversation between my husband and my best friend 😢😨
My mother’s funeral passed like a blur. People spoke comforting words, hugged me, someone set dishes on the table, someone cried silently. I could hardly hear anything. In the evening, the guests began to leave. The house became stifling and heavy. I wanted to get some air, so I quietly made my way to the river.
The riverbank was wet and slippery after the rain. I stood at the edge of the water when the ground suddenly gave way beneath my feet. I didn’t even have time to scream, and in a second, I was in the icy water. The current was very strong. My dress immediately pulled me down, and my shoes made it hard to move. For a few seconds, I just struggled, thinking I was going to drown. But in my youth, I had swum for many years. That saved me. Instinct acted faster than fear. I turned onto my back, kicked with my legs, and swam toward the reeds on the bank. My fingers touched the stiff stalks. I grabbed hold and struggled to pull myself onto the shore.

I lay in the wet mud, trying to catch my breath. That’s when I heard voices. Someone had come to the edge just above my head. I cautiously looked up through the reeds and froze. It was my husband and my best friend. They were very close to the edge, watching the water.
“—She won’t make it,” my husband said calmly. “Even experienced swimmers would struggle.”
“And if she does?” asked the friend nervously.
“She won’t. And everyone saw that she had a little to drink after the funeral.”
The friend smiled softly. “She’s not a problem. I’ll say I saw her slip and fall. I’ll say I tried to help, but I couldn’t reach her in time.”
“Exactly,” the husband replied.
Suddenly, I realized I might not have fallen into the river by accident. The friend fell silent, then suddenly asked:
“Well, what did you do about her mother’s death? Did you pay a bribe?”
The husband replied calmly, as if speaking about something ordinary.
“Yes. Everything is under control. Everyone believed it was a heart attack.”
Everything collapsed inside me.
The friend laughed softly. “You promised to tell everything once they were both on the other side. Now explain why you wanted to eliminate both of them at the same time.”
The husband was silent for a few seconds. “Because they knew a very important secret.”
“And what was that?”
I stopped breathing. Then he revealed something that sent a cold shiver down my spine. For this, he had eliminated my mother… and for this, he wanted to eliminate me 😨😱

Shortly before her death, my mother had called me urgently. When I arrived, she was sitting in the kitchen in a robe, holding an old photograph in her hands.
“Do you remember my brother?” she asked softly.
I vaguely remembered him. A tall man who used to carry me on his shoulders. He died when I was six years old.
My mother paused for a moment and said:
“We helped him leave. And I kept silent for almost forty years.”
She explained that her brother worked in the district administration, handling land registration. In the late 1970s, several influential people had illegally registered large plots of land in their names. The documents were later forged with false stamps and signatures.
He was the only one who knew the truth. He managed to take the real documents and hide them at my mother’s house.
A month later, he was found dead on the railway tracks. Everyone was told that he had been drinking and had fallen under the train.
My mother had remained silent about it for nearly forty years out of fear. But recently, luxurious villas began to be built on that land. The owner of the construction site was the son of the man who had forged the documents.
My mother said they had started watching her. Strange cars appeared near the house.
“They’ve found out,” she said.
Before she passed, my mother said:
“I’ve re-hidden the documents. I won’t tell you the address. Look where we used to go often when you were little. When you find them — take them to the court.”

At the time, I didn’t understand how dangerous it was. But somehow, my husband discovered the existence of the documents. And now, listening to his conversation with my best friend, I finally understood the truth.
They killed my mother. And they had tried to kill me too.
