The children had long forgotten their mother, who lived alone in a village. They hadn’t called her for months, didn’t care about her health, and didn’t even come when she passed away. A neighbor announced the funeral, specifying that it would take place in two days.

The daughter, Anna, immediately decided not to go. She had exams, student debts, and no money. She had no intention of spending her last savings on the trip and the funeral, especially since she didn’t want to see relatives or hear any reproaches. Her relationship with her mother had been cold for a long time.
The second daughter, Victoria, learned of her mother’s death while she was already abroad. She had just checked into a hotel with a friend and was planning her vacation. She quickly calculated the cost of a return ticket and the financial losses from canceling the trip. The decision seemed obvious to her — to continue with the vacation.
The son, Daniel, heard the news in the morning, during breakfast. He listened calmly, without emotion. Officially, he could take a day off — the reason was valid. But the trip was long, and anyway, he had had no connection with his mother for a long time. There were no warm feelings left for her or for his sisters.
There were few people at the funeral: neighbors, a few acquaintances, and former colleagues of the deceased. Near the grave stood a neighbor and a young girl who helped him. Neither Anna, Victoria, nor Daniel were present. Someone whispered that the children had not come.
A few days later, the three of them were summoned to the notary’s office. It was then that Victoria finally decided to return and postpone her vacation, Anna miraculously found some money, and the son took a day off. They were convinced that their mother’s house would be divided fairly among them, as the law dictated. But a bad feeling was growing inside them, as if things would not be so simple.
The notary’s office was located near the city center. At the entrance, Victoria saw Daniel standing there, with his usual military-like posture. Anna was also there, her face tense.

Anna was the first to understand and went pale. Victoria abruptly put down her phone, and Daniel straightened up slowly, as if he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
The notary then read the last part of the will. It was a personal explanation from the mother, handwritten:
«I devoted my entire life to them. Especially to educating my son. These debts concern his studies. Let him deal with them now.»
Silence fell over the room. Not only had they received nothing, but they were also left with what they had always tried to avoid — debts that weren’t really theirs and their own guilty conscience.
