In the mountains, the cold was intense. The lake was almost entirely covered with ice, but in one spot, the water remained open. That was where the wolf struggled. It had fallen into a hole and could not get out.
The ice beneath its paws was breaking; it slipped and kept falling back into the water. With each passing minute, it grew weaker. Its head barely stayed above the surface, its breathing was labored, and its soaked fur dragged it down.

An elderly woman was passing nearby to gather firewood. She heard splashes and a strange, hoarse sound. As she approached, she saw a huge gray wolf drowning. The animal had almost stopped struggling.
The old woman did not think about the fear she might feel facing a wild and dangerous animal. She quickly found a long dry branch, lay down on the ice to avoid falling through, and cautiously crawled toward the hole. The ice creaked beneath her, but she moved slowly and carefully.
“Hold on,” she said gently, extending the branch.
The wolf first showed its teeth, but it no longer had the strength to be angry. It grabbed the branch with its front paws. The woman pulled. Her hands trembled, her back ached, but she did not let go. The ice cracked again, water splashed at the edge, and finally, the wolf’s heavy body came to the surface.
The animal lay there, breathing with difficulty. One hind leg was twisted—it was clear it was broken. The wolf did not try to attack. It simply looked at the woman, as if it understood that she had just saved its life.
But at that moment… they emerged from the forest…
The old woman froze in fear 😱😲
She was about to retreat when she suddenly felt unfamiliar eyes upon her.

Shadows slowly emerged from behind the trees. In the icy air, ten pairs of eyes gleamed. It was a pack. The wolves had sensed the human’s scent and were approaching, ready to attack. They did not understand that this human had just saved their kin from the freezing water.
The elderly woman remained still. There was nowhere to run, and even if there had been, she wouldn’t have had time.
At that moment, the injured wolf struggled to stand. It positioned itself in front of the woman, shielding her with its body, and growled toward the pack. The growl was weak but filled with determination. The wolf looked at its pack, as if to make them understand that this woman must not be harmed.

The pack stopped. For a few seconds, no one moved. Then one of the wolves lowered its head, and the others slowly began to retreat.
The injured wolf cast one last look at the woman. In its gaze, there was neither fear nor anger, only calm. A few seconds later, it turned and, limping, rejoined its pack.
The woman remained alone on the ice. The wind lifted the snow once more, as if nothing had happened.
