Every morning the woman felt nauseous, and the doctors were unable to find the cause, until one day, on a bus, an elderly jeweler noticed her necklace and quietly said:
“If you value your life, take off that pendant immediately and never wear it again…”

When the woman discovered what was hidden inside the pendant her husband had given her, she was overwhelmed by pure horror…
Every morning for Maria began the same way. She woke up with a feeling of heaviness in her body and almost immediately felt nausea rising up her throat. Sometimes she didn’t even manage to reach the bathroom, but more often she barely made it in time to shut the door and bend over the toilet. This had been going on for two months, and during that time she had grown accustomed to the condition, even though she could never truly accept it.
After yet another attack, Maria washed her face with cold water and stared at herself in the mirror for a long time. Her face had become pale, dark circles had appeared under her eyes, and her cheekbones stood out more sharply. She had visibly lost weight; her clothes hung more loosely than before. Over those months she had lost nearly seven kilograms without doing anything special.

At work, her colleagues had begun to whisper. Maria caught fragments of conversations about fatigue and nervous exhaustion. She had seen a general practitioner, a gastroenterologist, an endocrinologist, and many other specialists. All the tests came back normal. The doctors always said the same thing: her body was healthy, there were no serious problems, perhaps the cause was psychosomatic. They advised her to consult a psychologist, but Maria didn’t feel crazy and didn’t believe everything was due only to nerves.
On her way to work she took the subway, as always. Morning rush hour, the crowd, the smell of coffee, winter coats, and unfamiliar perfumes formed a familiar background. Maria held onto the handrail and tried not to think about the nausea. It subsided a little, but the weakness remained.
When an unfamiliar voice suddenly sounded beside her, she flinched and opened her eyes. In front of her stood an elderly man wearing a warm coat and an old fur hat. He was looking at her intently, with an expression that was far too serious.
“Take off the necklace. I know what’s inside the pendant,” he said quietly.
Maria didn’t immediately realize the stranger was speaking to her. Instinctively, she covered the jewelry on her chest with her hand and sharply replied that it was a gift from her husband and that he had no right to speak to her that way. The man didn’t argue and didn’t raise his voice.
He said he had worked as a jeweler for many years and knew such things well. He pointed to the side of the pendant and explained that the thin line was not decorative but a hidden mechanism. Then he handed her a business card and added:
“If you value your life, you must remove the pendant and never wear it again.”
The train stopped, the doors opened, and the man stepped out without turning back. Maria remained in the car, holding the business card in her hand.
All day she was unable to focus on her work. Her thoughts kept returning to the stranger’s words and to the pendant resting on her chest. That evening, after returning home, Maria went straight to the bathroom. She turned on the light and examined the jewelry in the mirror for a long time. The oval silver pendant with a delicate lily was just as beautiful as the day her husband had given it to her for their anniversary.
Maria remembered how her husband had told her he had commissioned the pendant from a private workshop and wanted to give her a special gift. She ran her finger along the side and suddenly felt a tiny irregularity. There really was a thin line. Maria pressed a little harder, and the pendant split into two halves.
What she saw inside made her feel violently nauseous, and she had to grab the sink to keep from falling…
Inside the pendant was a tiny capsule with microscopic openings. Within it was a rare organic toxin that began to act when warmed by body heat.
Every day it released an extremely small dose of poison—so minimal that no test detected poisoning. The toxin did not kill immediately.
It slowly damaged the stomach and nervous system, causing constant nausea, weakness, and rapid weight loss. From the outside, everything looked like a strange, inexplicable illness.

That was exactly what the man had counted on. He wanted Maria to fade away gradually, for doctors to throw up their hands and speak of an unknown diagnosis. Her death was meant to appear natural, without suspicion and without traces.
He knew that a few months earlier Maria had transferred ownership of an apartment inherited from her grandmother to herself and was convinced that after her death all her assets would pass to him.
The pendant became the most convenient and safest way for him to get rid of his wife and obtain everything, without risking exposure. ☹️🤔🤔
