Two teenagers burst into the emergency room. They were dragging along a man dressed in dirty, soaking clothes. He smelled of alcohol and filth. His face was dark, almost blue; his lips were purple, and his eyes rolled back. He was barely breathing — only a few weak, irregular gasps. The boys simply dropped him onto the tiled floor before disappearing.
The man lay motionless.
The on-duty surgeon cast him a brief glance before diving back into his phone.
— Another homeless guy. Call security and throw him out.

Éva, the cleaning lady, stood there with her mop, unable to take her eyes off him. She noticed the bulging veins in his neck, the odd position of his Adam’s apple, the asymmetry of his chest. His heart was barely working. It was clearly a cardiac arrest.
Suddenly, the body on the floor convulsed violently. The man’s face turned almost black. The gasps stopped completely.
Éva didn’t hesitate. She dropped the mop, ran to the counter, and grabbed a bright yellow box cutter. She tore open his dirty shirt, placed her hands on his chest, and began resuscitating him. Hard. Rhythmic. Without stopping. She counted in her head to keep the pace.
For a long moment, his chest didn’t respond. Then, suddenly, it rose slightly. The man gasped convulsively. Then again. His breathing was weak, but it had returned.
At that precise moment, the chief doctor stormed in.
— What’s going on here?! he shouted, seeing Éva. — Are you crazy?! Who gave you permission?! You have no medical training! Do you even know what you’re doing?!

Éva didn’t respond. She kept supporting the man and monitoring his breathing.
— I’m sending you away! the chief doctor continued. — If he dies, you’ll go to prison! If he can’t pay or has no insurance, they’ll sue us! Do you even know who this man is?!
But at that exact moment, something happened that sent chills through the entire hospital 😱😢
The man lying on the stretcher slowly opened his eyes.
He looked at Éva and whispered in a hoarse voice:
— I… I’m not homeless. I’m an ordinary man. Last night, I was attacked in the street. Beaten. Abandoned. They took everything from me.

He paused for a moment to catch his strength.
— I’ll pay for everything. The treatment. The hospital. And you… thank you. You saved my life.
A complete silence filled the room.
Later, it was discovered that he was one of the richest men in the city. That was precisely why he had been attacked.
Éva, the cleaning lady, remained a cleaning lady that day.
But her act became a legend throughout the hospital. Despite the threats of dismissal, for her, a human life was worth more than anything.
