The elderly woman had been coming to this market almost every day for years. After her husband passed away and her children moved to other cities, she had no other means of survival.
She sold vegetables from her own garden. Everything on her stall was homegrown. She planted, watered, tended to them, and spent her last savings on seeds and fertilizer. She was over seventy years old, with a painful back and trembling hands, yet she continued to go to the market early every morning.
The locals had known her for a long time. Some would simply greet her; others would buy from her, even if it was a little more expensive—not out of pity, but out of respect for her work.
That day, a man in a designer suit appeared at the market. Impeccable shoes, luxury watch, confident stride. He stood out sharply from the crowd. He approached the grandmother, inspected the vegetables, and asked the price with a mocking smile.
When the grandmother calmly announced the price, the man’s expression changed abruptly.
“That much money for rotten tomatoes? Are you kidding?”
“Why rotten, young man? They’re fresh. I grew them myself,” she replied softly.
“For that price, I could buy tons of them!” he exclaimed angrily.
“You’re right, grandson.”
Those words seemed to set him off.
“How dare you call me grandson? I could never be the grandson of someone like you. Look at you!” he shouted, drawing the attention of those around him. “Do you really think anyone wants your pathetic vegetables?”
He grew even angrier, kicking over the stall and violently pushing the grandmother. She couldn’t help but fall off her chair and hit the ground.
The man, furious, began stomping on the vegetables, crushing tomatoes and cucumbers under his boots as if he wanted to destroy not just the produce, but the woman herself.
The grandmother burst into tears and said in a trembling voice:
“This is my last penny… How will I survive now?”
