The officer had been arrested after a tragic operation. He was accused of causing his colleague’s death, even though it had been an accident. The trial lasted for weeks — testimonies, evidence, pleas… Finally, the verdict came: seven years in prison.
When the judge pronounced his final statement, the man spoke in a trembling voice:
“I’m not looking for excuses. I never wanted this to happen; it was an accident. I only ask… let me say goodbye to him. Let me ask for his forgiveness… and that of his family.”
Silence filled the courtroom. The judge lowered his eyes, then nodded:
“Very well. But you will travel under escort.”
On the day of the funeral, even the sky seemed to mourn. A cold rain fell endlessly, and the wind pushed dark clouds over the cemetery.
Family, friends, and colleagues had gathered. The victim’s mother stood a little apart, wrapped in a black shawl. Her shoulders trembled as her lips whispered her son’s name.
Everyone was crying. No one spoke; only the patter of rain on the coffin lid and muffled sobs could be heard.
Suddenly, police cars appeared in the distance. People turned their heads. A man in an orange prison uniform, handcuffed and with his head bowed, stepped out of one of the cars. Four officers accompanied him.
A murmur spread through the crowd:

As the prisoner approached, people stepped aside to let him pass. He stopped in front of the coffin, on which lay the fallen officer’s badge and cap.
