The police had received a call about illegal trading at the corner of a main street and rushed to the scene. But when they saw a harmless old woman with a basket of vegetables, their determination faded.
The woman stood next to tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers neatly arranged, dressed in a worn blouse and a faded skirt.
«Grandma, did you know street vending is prohibited?» one of the officers asked calmly.
«I know, my dear,» she sighed. «I just need money to buy medicine for my sick son. He’s alone, and I have no one else to turn to. I grew all these vegetables myself, in my garden. There’s nothing wrong with that.»
The officers exchanged glances. The offense was clear, but they felt pity for the old lady.
“We’ll let it go this time,” the senior officer said. “But Grandma, try to find another part-time job. Other officers may not be as kind as us.”
“Yes, yes, absolutely,” the woman replied, visibly nervous, as if eager for them to leave.
“Well, since we’re here, let’s at least buy something from you,” one of the officers smiled. “We’ll do a good deed.”
“No, don’t worry, dear,” she replied quickly. “I already have plenty of customers.”
“Plenty of customers?” his partner asked, surprised. “But there’s no one around.”
“Well… they’re coming tomorrow morning,” the old lady laughed. “You just missed them.”
“Alright then, we’ll at least take a few tomatoes,” the officer insisted.
“No need, my boy,” she waved him off. “Leave them. Let others enjoy them.”
Her voice trembled, her eyes wandered. One of the officers frowned, leaned over, and picked up a tomato from the crate. He examined it carefully, then said sharply:
“Arrest her. Immediately.”
“What? What happened?” his partner asked, stunned.
