I never thought I could live in a constant state of tension. Before the wedding, I thought a mother-in-law was like in the movies: strict but fair, and that she would eventually accept you if you made an effort. I tried. Really. But my mother-in-law seemed to have decided from the start: «You are a stranger.»
She didn’t shout. She didn’t cause scandals. She simply… slowly pushed me out of her life.
At first, it was all about insignificant details. I prepared dinner — she «accidentally» spilled salt in the soup when I turned around. I did the laundry — she poured bleach on the colors. She said she hadn’t noticed anything.
Then my makeup kit started to disappear. My favorite lipstick was suddenly broken, my cream was empty. When I asked about it, she answered with a surprised look:
— Maybe you forgot you had already used it all?
One morning, I woke up because of a strange smell — the room smelled like burnt rags. I ran to the kitchen: the oven was on, and inside were my shoes. The ones I was supposed to wear for an interview. She obviously denied everything:
— Maybe the neighbors are playing tricks.

I almost laughed — but it wasn’t the time.
The last straw was the dress. The one I was going to wear to a friend’s wedding. It had been hanging in the wardrobe all week. I checked it every day. And two hours before leaving, I found it… torn.
My mother-in-law passed by the room and softly said,
“If it’s not meant for you, then it wasn’t destined to be.”
I told my husband, but he didn’t believe me; he said I was making it up. So I decided to install a camera — and I was horrified by what I saw.
I had placed the camera aimed at the kitchen, naively thinking that, at worst, I would see her spitting in my food or adding salt to the plants. But the reality was worse.
On the second day, while watching the video, I saw her approach my cup. She took out a small white packet and poured something that looked like sugar into the tea — but it wasn’t. Then she took a spoon and stirred carefully. On her face was a cold, frightening smile. She whispered:
— It will be better this way. You must not be here.
