In the church, silence reigned. People were sitting on the benches; some prayed quietly, others listened to the priest’s words. Everything seemed to be going as usual… until a man appeared at the door.
He was barefoot, wearing old torn clothes, with gray hair and a tired look. A quiet murmur ran through the room. One could smell the heavy odor emanating from him. Some women tensed up, men turned their heads to be as far away as possible. No one wanted to have anything to do with him.
The homeless man, understanding this, didn’t even look toward the benches. He knew he was dirty, he knew that the “normal” people would not accept him. So he knelt directly on the cold floor and joined his hands to pray. His lips murmured words that almost no one heard.

Meanwhile, the worshippers kept looking at each other.
— What is he doing here?
— What a shame…
— He doesn’t belong here. Even in church, you can’t find peace from people like him.
Some stood up and left, refusing to stay next to “such a man.”
At that moment, the priest interrupted the mass. He slowly came down from the pulpit and approached the homeless man. The crowd held their breath. Everyone hoped the priest would chase him away, but he did something unexpected 😲😲

The priest placed his hand on the man’s back and said in a strong voice:
— God sent you here, brother. For us to help you. So that through us, He may extend His hand.
Then the priest took off his shoes and offered them to the man.
— Take them. Pray now with us. Today, we will pray for your soul, for your suffering, for everything that led you to the streets. But we will also pray for the sins of those who judge a man by his appearance and look upon God’s creation with hatred. For the Lord taught us to love our neighbor.

These words struck the hearts of all present. People lowered their heads; many no longer dared to look at each other. They felt shame. Because they realized the priest was talking about them.
This story reminds us that kindness begins within ourselves.
